Games to play in the car

It’s a beautiful fall day. You’re in your car. The sun is shining and the leaves are at peak color painting the hills around you in red, yellow, and orange. The peace of the drive is broken, however, when the dreaded “I’m bored” sounds from the backseat. What do you do now?

In our time is become the norm for children to play electronic games while in the car. Most smart phones even provide internet access while on the go. While these kinds of games are great, there are times, when a good old-fashioned car game can’t be beat. What kind of car games you might ask? Well here are a few games for you to try with your kids the next time you’re in the car.

1) Alphabetical Billboards: In this game everyone in the car looks out the windows and attempts to find items or words on Billboards in alphabetical order. This works really well if you’re driving through a city. Country? No so much. If you driving through the country side just try to find any objects in alphabetical order. For example Apple Tree, Bridge, Cow…You get the picture. If your kids are older and able to keep track of their own lists the first person to finish the alphabet wins. If your kids are younger everyone can work together to finish the same list instead of competing.

2) Alphabetical Words: In this game everyone in the car tries to think of objects in alphabetical order. For example everyone thinks of a word that starts with A, and then everyone thinks of a work that starts with B. If one of the car’s occupants can’t think of a word they are out of the game. The winner is the person who is able to think of a word when everyone else has gotten out. How many words can you think of that start with x? Might want to keep a dictionary handy for this one….

3) Hang-man: This makes a great car game for the whole family as long as one of the kids is old enough to write and keep score.

4) Tick-tack-toe: Also a great car game for older kids.

5) Slug-bug: This car game is played at night and consists of watching incoming cars. The first person to see a car with one headlight out yells slug-bug and slugs the person next to them. Boys seem to love this game for some reason.
